Difference between metal detection and X-ray inspection

Many production lines use control & inspection systems. Metal detection or X-ray inspection is often chosen, or combined with control routes. Very effective technologies with many similarities, but also differences.

What can a metal detector do?
With metal detection, it is possible to detect iron particles and non-ferrous metals. This is done by electromagnetic fields that detect foreign objects and then eject the contaminated product. A metal detector is therefore very suitable for production lines where checks must be made for iron, (stainless) steel and aluminum. Furthermore, a metal detector is easy to integrate into a production line because the size is relatively small even with a conveyor belt.

When to opt for X-ray inspection?
X-ray inspection offers more advantages than just the detection of more contaminating elements than pure metal detection. This way you can also inspect products in cans, glass, foil, aluminum, metallized plastic or packaging with a metal clip. Furthermore, the X-rays detect whether the product is complete, in the right place and whether the correct number has been added. This happens because the x-ray beam scans through the product like a fan. An x-ray system is not an all-round detector. It is not possible to detect wood, most plastic, hair, thin bones and insects.

Is X-ray inspection dangerous?
The X-ray inspection systems from Pen-Tec are completely safe to use. The X-ray dosage is exceptionally low and falls well within the very strict safety limits. For example, the naturally occurring background radiation of our daily environment is many times higher than this form of X-ray radiation. Moreover, the equipment is well protected and therefore production employees run no risk whatsoever. Also, foods or product compositions are not affected by X-ray inspection. The taste and structure remain completely the same and the quality is not lost.
