S3E12 - The Hidden Impact of Packaging
Guest: Babette Porcelijn - Author & Impact Expert on Sustainable Living In this episode, Ariane & Lucy talk with Babette Porcelijn, author and impact expert on sustainable living. Babette studied Industrial Design in Delft and delved into the world of impact in 2014. What she discovered was a wake-up call: our greatest environmental impact often lies in "hidden impact." Think of everything we import, but don't perceive as impact because it remains hidden. She wrote the groundbreaking book "The Hidden Impact" about where our greatest environmental impact really comes from. And in her latest book, "Happy 2050," she paints a hopeful future if we make the right choices now. It focuses on sustainable choices, packaging impact, and the role of consumer behavior, but also on the systemic aspects: pricing, wealth concentration, and the growth imperative of capitalism. Her new book is in the works. In this episode you will learn: What “hidden impact” is and why we underestimate it Why packaging has a small impact on a single piece but a huge impact at scale Which system solutions are needed, from deposit refunds to economic democracy A conversation about the impact you don’t see but that is there, systems that are steering wrong and choices that steer towards a positive 2050.
