Packaging materials

Packaging is a problem child in the world of sustainability. The ever-growing demand for consumer goods has led to unprecedented growth in the packaging industry over the past decade. The environmental damage caused by waste from single-use plastic packaging has become enormous, and industry and society are looking for solutions. As a result, we are becoming increasingly aware that we must use our scarce resources and materials efficiently with regard to the environment and ourselves.

A number of factors are of great importance when choosing a particular material. For example, the difference in the ecological footprint between materials is an important indicator. In addition, issues such as food waste due to broken packaging, the influence of packaging on shelf life, transport emissions due to differences in weight, and energy consumption for the recycling process are also important. Only by taking all these factors into account can a fair assessment be made of the social costs of the choice of materials. This means that all links in the production chain and the life cycle of the product must be taken into account.

  • When can the minimization of material use be weighed against quality?

  • How do companies balance ‘green’ procurement of packaging materials with the actual CO₂ reduction achieved by using recycled packaging materials?

  • What is more important: the sustainability of the entire production chain or the sustainability of the material itself?

  • Are biobased alternatives to plastics the solution?

  • How is it that when oil prices are low, virgin plastic is preferred over recycled plastic?
