It is no secret that packaging plays an important role in the consumer purchasing process. Appearance (design) and functionality are essential, as is sustainability. Adding extra value to your product on the (online) shelf is a challenge. A product must convey a responsible message while also being appealing. What triggers your consumer and how do you translate that into the packaging? How do you stimulate the brain by presenting your product in a unique way? And what is the role of design and sustainability in this?

We Dutch open an average of seven packages per day. Since this accounts for 20% of total Dutch waste, it raises sustainability issues. The focus is often on reducing packaging material, but did you know that the environmental impact in the food sector is many times greater with ‘underpackaging’ than with ‘overpackaging’? The issue of sustainable packaging often seems to come back to the recycling process. What will this look like in the future? What new sustainable materials can you expect in the short term?
