Causes of scarcity
Firstly, there is the decline in demand for graphic paper in recent years, which has resulted in a sharp decrease in production capacity and the number of employees active in paper production. In addition, the demand for cardboard packaging – partly due to corona – has exploded worldwide. This has resulted in increasing competition in the market for used (recyclable) paper for graphic paper production. There is also ‘China’ again and by extension the Asian market: there the demand for paper has increased enormously. To meet this demand – and although less than 15% of the pulp we use comes from outside Europe, China buys large volumes of pulp – the basic raw material for making various types of paper – at higher prices with a corresponding effect on the European market. But now that we need more volume in Europe, a shortage has arisen (for the time being).

Design to recycle
Due to all European intentions and measures to make packaging more sustainable, there is also a task for designers and producers. Creative solutions emerge, in which designers not only look at the limitations of paper and cardboard as a packaging material, but also at the distinctive possibilities and added value. For example, the product is not visible in a closed box. With a sophisticated design and the right folding and punching shapes, it is still possible to show products in the packaging without sacrificing protection.
